The method, the data, and the limits behind every number on this site.
The World Cup 2026 Predictor is a Monte-Carlo simulation. Instead of offering one prediction, it plays out the rest of the knockout bracket, all the way to the final, tens of thousands of times and counts how often each outcome happens. A team that lifts the trophy in 2,000 of 10,000 simulated tournaments gets a 20 percent title chance. That is the whole idea: turn one uncertain bracket into a distribution of outcomes rather than a single guess.
One match at a time
Every simulated match starts from each team's Elo rating, a single number that captures current strength. The gap in ratings sets a win probability and, separately, the expected number of goals for each side. Goals are drawn from a Poisson distribution around that expectation, so scorelines look like real football: plenty of 1-0 and 2-1 results, the occasional rout. The host nations (the United States, Mexico and Canada) get a small rating boost for home advantage. When a knockout match finishes level, the winner is decided by a penalty-shootout draw that leans slightly toward the stronger side.
Who scores the goals
When a simulated team scores, the goal is handed to one of its players by a scoring weight. That weight blends the player's international goals per cap, their position (forwards score more than midfielders, who score more than defenders) and an age curve, with a shrinkage adjustment so that a striker with only a handful of caps does not outrank an established scorer on a small, lucky sample. Assists are estimated from a similar creativity weight. The golden boot race then counts how often each player finishes a simulated tournament as its top scorer.
Real results feed the model
Once the group stage is over, the bracket is the real Round of 32 draw, and players carry their actual goals into the knockouts as a starting tally, so the golden boot race begins from reality. As each knockout round is played, its results are locked in: the losers drop to a zero percent title chance and the model only simulates the rounds that have not happened yet. A player who has already scored seven starts seven ahead, and the model adds the remaining knockout goals on top. The Elo ratings, the bracket and the played results are a snapshot that gets refreshed as the tournament unfolds.
Reading the numbers
- Title odds: the share of simulated tournaments a team wins, alongside how often it reaches the final, the semi-finals and earlier rounds.
- Golden boot:a player's expected total goals and how often they end up the tournament's top scorer.
- Dark horse: the strongest run produced by a lower-rated team.
- Bracket of death: which quarter of the draw is toughest by combined rating.
- Never won once: teams that did not lift the trophy in even a single simulated run.
Run it yourself
The simulator runs entirely in your browser. Your runs accumulate: click again and the sample grows, so the odds settle the more you run. You can spin a single tournament to watch one bracket play out, or lock your own picks and simulate only the matches you have not yet decided. Nothing you do is sent to a server.
What this is not
This is a model, not a fixture list or a tip sheet. The ratings and the bracket are a best-effort snapshot, and the numbers describe tendencies across thousands of runs, never a guarantee for any single match. It is built for curiosity and fun. It is not betting advice, and nothing here should be used to place a wager. If you choose to gamble, do so responsibly and only where it is legal for you.
